Celebration of Couples Event
A great deal of media attention has been given to failed marriages but little to couples who have opted to stay together, deal with their challenges, stay together and raise their children, and devote time and energy making invaluable contributions to the community. Such couples are the very backbone of our society and we believe that public recognition of such couples is long overdue.
On Sunday, November 2, from 12 to 3 p.m., at the Tapestry Banquet Center located at 24580 Evergreen in Southfield, MI, The Johnson Relationship Institute will hold its Second Annual “Celebration of Couples Recognition Luncheon.” Over 25 metropolitan Detroit successful couples will be recognized for their outstanding commitment to each other, their families, and the community at large.
The event includes a luncheon, live entertainment, luxurious giveaways, a mini workshop, and the presentation of awards to the couple honorees.
The ticket price for the event is $ 60 per person and $100 per couple for early bird registrations which ends on September 16th. The ticket price is $75 per person and $125 per couple thereafter. All registered participants will also receive a copy of Jesse & Melva’s book, “Mining for Gold In Your Relationship.”
The proceeds from the event will not only benefit the “Keeping Families Together Project” of Johnson Relationship Institute but a percentage of the funds will also be contributed to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Foundation in support of its humanitarian efforts throughout the U.S. and aboard.
History of the Celebration of Couples
After being bombarded by the steady barrage of negative media stories about the high divorce rate and numerous celebrity break ups, Jesse and Melva Johnson decided that it was time to shift from the gloom and doom and to focus on relationships that are working. And, make no mistake. There are a lot of them. Not only are these relationships working well, these couples often donate their time and talents to various faith, business, civic, charitable, and other communities serving the common good. Jesse and Melva believed that the recognition of such couples was long overdue. They decided to do something about it.
At the time, Jesse and Melva had been married 26 years and had been working together professionally for 27 years with individuals, couples, groups and businesses to create successful relationships at home, at work, and in the community. From their work, especially with couples, they saw firsthand, how couples had transformed their lives and relationships. There were many stories of courage, faith, and hope to be told to inspire others. Those stories, they believed, needed to be told as examples of happy, healthy, and successful couples. Therefore the idea of celebration of couples was born.
In 2004, Jesse and Melva Johnson, hosted their first “Celebration of Couples Awards Luncheon. Couples were nominated for recognition by family, friends, and members of community and faith organizations. The stories of those couples who were honored were both touching, inspirational, and heartfelt. In addition to the recognition of couples, the luncheon included an afternoon of good food, phenomenal music, prizes and lots of wonderful gifts. It was so well received that Jesse and Melva decided that it had to become an annual event.
Mission of the Event
The mission of the event has two important purposes. The first is to give public recognition to several couples whose relationships are role models in the community. The second is to raise funds for the Johnson Relationship Institute’s “Keeping Families Together” pilot project. We are all aware of the extreme stress being faced by a multitude of couples due to the downturn in the economy. These couples need empathetic help and support to cope with the fear and uncertainty that is the result of their acute financial situations. We are committed to providing help to these unserved and underserved “at risk” families. By offering marriage and relationship education and skill training we know that we can assist couples to not only cope during these difficult times but more importantly, be able to keep their families together.
