About JRI

The Johnson Relationship Institute, a 501 C3 nonprofit corporation, was incorporated in 2001 by its cofounders, Jesse Johnson, M.A. and Melva Thomas Johnson, LMSW. The Institute’s mission is to provide marriage and relationship counseling and education services to at risk families who would not be able to afford such services. The Johnsons are licensed psychotherapists who have been providing “for fee” counseling services for adults in the metropolitan Detroit community for over 31 years. The acute dysfunction that often leads to the breakup of these families has long term consequences—not only for the family but for society as a whole. Recent research indicates that with early intervention, 80% of these families can be spared the pain of family dissolution. Through marriage and relationship education, skill development, and counseling, we have experienced the extremely positive impact on such at risk families. And, we remain committed to providing such services to as many couples as possible through as many avenues as possible. For the good of society as a whole, we must reverse the number of children who must bear the pain of broken and dysfunctional families.
